ABOUT H&M FERMAN and GILFORD PLASTICS

H & M Ferman was established overseas in 1973 and commenced Australian operations in 1975. Our business began in the VW aftermarket parts sector before expanding, through the 1980s, into importation of rear vision mirrors for the bus and truck market. By 1999, this expertise led us to design and produce a purpose-built mirror for Isuzu’s “F” series trucks, marking the beginning of a long-standing specialisation in mirror systems engineering and the design and manufacture of the rear vision mirrors.

From 2005, this capability extended into the Defence sector, with H & M Ferman supplying mirror systems for the Thales Bushmaster Protected Mobility Vehicle. Our Defence supply relationships have since grown to include the Hawkei, Unimog and Strikemaster platforms, reflecting our ongoing commitment to supporting the Australian Defence Force with locally engineered, mission-ready components.

MANUFACTURING CAPABILITY & INNOVATION

  • Over five decades, H & M Ferman has continually reinvested in its people, processes and technology. Several of our innovations have been granted worldwide patents, and our manufacturing footprint now includes:
  • A three-axis CNC Vertical Machining Centre (VMC) and EDM machine
  • Injection moulding presses at 650, 360, 310 and 140 tonne clamping capacities
  • 3D printing capability for rapid pre-production prototyping
  • Full CAD-to-CAM design and manufacturing workflow
  • An in-house toolroom facility
  • Powder coating capability

With the purchase of Gilford Plastics in 2015, these capabilities allow H & M Ferman to take a product from initial concept and prototype through to tooling, production and finishing, entirely under one roof — a capability of real relevance to Defence sovereign industrial capability priorities.

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM THE TOUR

Your visit will provide an opportunity to see the full breadth of H & M Ferman’s operations in action. During the tour, AIDN representatives can expect to:

  • Walk through our manufacturing floor and see our CNC, EDM and toolroom operations firsthand
  • View the design, moulding and finishing processes behind our mirror systems, including those supplied for Defence platforms such as the Bushmaster, Hawkei and Strikemaster
  • See our injection moulding presses and plastics manufacturing capability through Gilford Plastics
  • Observe our 3D printing and prototyping process, from CAD design through to physical part
  • Learn about our powder coating and finishing capability
  • Discuss our approach to quality, innovation and sovereign manufacturing capability, and how it aligns with the priorities of Australia’s Defence industrial base
