Nova Systems has been awarded a contract to deliver a Flight Test Instrumentation system to support The Royal Australian Navy.

Leveraging its global digital engineering and systems integration expertise, Nova Systems will deliver a Flight Test Instrumentation (FTI) system, including hardware and software, to support the Navy’s Aircraft Maintenance and Flight Trials Unit (AMAFTU)’s contemporary flight test activities.

AMAFTU plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety and efficiency of naval aviation operations by testing the integration of aircraft with naval platforms, and performance in various scenarios.

Nova Systems’ modernised FTI system will provide AMAFTU with the ability to operate various combinations of airborne and ground or ship-based instrumentation subsystems simultaneously.

A contemporary and configurable system was needed to support complex modern testing activities which range from Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) to any current Navy and Army rotary wing aircraft.

“AMAFTU’s work is vital for maintaining the operational readiness and safety of Navy’s aviation assets, contributing significantly to Australia’s Defence capabilities,” Nova Systems CEO, Dean Rosenfield, said.

“The integration of Nova’s contemporary FTI system provides AMAFTU with data and analysis from both aircraft and naval platforms to determine the appropriate safe operating limits for maritime flying operations.

“Our solution is a global effort between our teams experienced in supporting flight test for ship to aircraft integration, working closely with our UK based specialists who are delivering next-generation mission systems for search and rescue rotary wing aircraft.”

Nova will design, test, manufacture and integrate the FTI system, as well as provide training and support.

The development of the design will be backed by Nova’s Digital Engineering capabilities, delivering a contemporary approach to Systems Engineering and Test and Evaluation, aligning with Defence’s Digital Engineering Strategy.
