MEDIA RELEASE

The latest defence industry salary trends and workforce data is now available to download.

Kinexus, the leading recruitment provider to the Australian defence and national security sector, has released the tenth edition of its eagerly awaited Defence Industry Insights.

Leveraging their insider knowledge and deep access to the defence industry workforce, Kinexus’ Defence Industry Insights – Tenth Edition, provides government, defence organisations and related industry stakeholders an unparalleled insight into the status of their workforce, emerging trends, associated opportunities and threats; whilst workers gain a deeper understanding of salaries and employment patterns.

“The Defence Strategic Review has caused challenging conditions for defence industry workforce planners, but the project environment still sees industry struggling to attract and retain highly skilled workers” says Rob Kremer, Director and Defence Sector Leader at Kinexus.

Key takeaways from the latest industry insights include:

* Strong salary growth – In the 18 months since our last Industry Insights document, salaries have increased by an average of 3.5%. However, salary growth has been uneven across the states and territories. In the Southern and Western states, there has been strong salary growth, particularly in South Australia with a 6% average increase, whereas salaries in the Eastern states have languished.

* Decrease in industry career confidence – Since our ninth edition in 2022, there has been a significant decline in the amount of respondents expressing a high degree of confidence—from 55% 18 months ago to 40% currently.

* Increased interest in contracting – Although we are seeing a government-wide push to reduce the number of contractors used, we are still seeing a steady trend in the interest in contracting amongst workers.

* Top motivators in work – The top three motivators for work have stayed the same; ‘Interesting work’, ‘Work life balance and ‘Remuneration’.

* Attraction and retention considerations – 65% of those surveyed receive additional benefits beyond annual salary and statutory superannuation. This has remained steady (between 60% – 65%) since 2019.
